past rides

Sun 8 November 2009: a joint ride with Oxford City CTC group
This ride started from Broad Street in central Oxford, joining the forces of Isis with those of the Oxford City CTC (and so, a mixed ride). The full forty-five mile ride stopped at Witney for coffee and The Plough at Alverscott for lunch. Isis riders not wanting to ride the entire 45 miles ride had the opportunity to ride straight back to Oxford after coffee; this return trip to coffee and back will be a fairly flat 30 miles. The ride leader was Stephen Lee, and the early return from Witney was covered by Ellen Lee.

Sat 7 November 2009: a slow and steady ride to Sandford-on-Thames
This slow 7 mile ride along the towpath to Sandford-on-Thames returned to Oxford via Littlemore. The ride leader was Lucy Tennyson.

Sat 17 October 2009: 20 miles to Woodstock and back (see photograph)
This month, the third-Saturday-of-the-month ride started in the afternoon for a change. Thirteen Isis Cyclists met outside the Sheldonian Theatre on Broad Street for a ride to Woodstock. It was a mellow, grey sort of afternoon with occasional appearances by the sun. We wound our way through leafy North Oxford and Summertown before crossing the ring road on the cycle bridge in Cutteslowe. We then took the bridle track through the hamlet of Watereaton before emerging in Gosford. After taking care not to lose anyone in Kidlington we rode past the airport and onto the A44 cycle track for the last couple of miles to Woodstock. We met up with a small group of riders from the Witney CTC group and enjoyed tea and cakes in the Oxfordshire Museum garden. Some of us met the museum’s latest resident (see the photo!): “It’s behind you!” The ride leader was Ellen Lee.

Sat 10 October 2009: a 7 mile meander (see photograph)
On this very sunny morning  we headed off for a gentle meander along the towpath and the back streets of Jericho to Wolvercote. A lot of chatter and everyone enjoying themselves as we went past Godstow Nunnery and through the lock – good picture opportunity! Nearly safely through to Binsey when we were charged by a herd of snorting bulls – well not exactly, actually we  met 2 young dogs zipping about with their owner waving his arms in the air and shouting ‘Allez!’ at some confused and not totally friendly black cows  which made our path through the herd a little more interesting than it needed to be! Luckily we all survived unscathed and managed to wend our way to the Jam Factory for a coffee and cake, or in some cases a lovely local beer and a bit more chat! The ride leader was Sarah Spackman.

Sun 4 October 2009: the Bike Blenheim event (see photographs)
The Bike Blenheim event, organized by British Cycling, attracted over 25 riders from from Isis Cyclists, Oxford City CTC, and Oxford City Sustrans Rangers. We cycled the eight miles to Woodstock on the direct route along the Woodstock Road and the A44 cycle track which are fairly quiet on a Sunday morning. Some riders went ahead of the group and others chose to use Route 5 as an alternative, so the party split quite quickly, and the groups dispersed once we were inside the Park each to wander through at will. The events included a 60 mile Sportif ride, a cycle polo competition, a demonstration of Cyclo Cross and a 20km time trial. The highlight of the day was the Brompton World Championship race in which 600 competitors cycled round two laps of the course. Helmets and collar and ties were mandatory (well, Bromptoms are commuting bikes after all!) After the race the park was open to all and a good numebr re-grouped to cycle round. The weather had been a little on the chilly side but we found a spot by the lake, in the sun and out of the wind, for a very pleasant picnic lunch. The ride leader was Helen Beane and the sweeper was Philippa.

Sat 19 September 2009: the September long ride to Abingdon (see photographs)
Eighteen Isis Cyclists gathered today for a ride to Abingdon in fantastic late summer weather. The outward route took us through Kennington and onto Sunningwell where we took a track that cunningly brought us out on the outskirts of Abingdon. By now the sun was out and we sat and drank coffee (and in my case ate a homemade  flapjack…thanks Clare!) in the main square. We returned to Oxford along the towpath, by Radley Lakes and then into the edge of Kennington where we took the Sustrans track back onto the river towpath at Iffley.  The ride was lead by Sarah Spackman and the sweepers were Lucy and Marion.

Sat 5 September 2009: a short September ride to Wytham (see photographs)
Eighteen Isis Cyclists assembled outside the Sheldonian Theatre this morning for a leisurely ride to Wytham. The sun was out and we enjoyed a pleasant and relaxed pootle along the river towpath to Osney and then on quiet road and parkside path to North Hinksey. Here we rode up to the Botley Interchange and cut through onto the back road to Wytham. Luckily the Wytham Stores had been pre-warned and we enjoyed a sociable time sitting out in their cotteage garden, eating huge slices of cake (calorie deficit definitely not a problem on this ride!) and drinking coffee. Eventually we got back on our bikes and return along the river towpath from Godstow to Jericho and then back into the centre of Oxford where there were lots of people in fancy dress, and being Oxford, nobody batted an eyelid! It was great to see so many people out at relatively short notice, including several new riders. The ride leader was Ellen Lee and the sweeper was Lucy Wright.

Sat 15 August 2009: 20 miles in the direction of Charlton on Otmoor
Today we met in milky sunshine and pleasantly warm conditions for a 20-mile ride anticlockwise around Otmoor. Twenty six riders left The Somerset Pub on Marston road and headed eastwards through Elsfield and Beckley. (This was our founder, Amanda Wrigley’s last ride with us for a while as she leaves soon for her new job in Chicago. We bade farwell to her in Beckley as she had to return to Oxford. We all wish her the best of luck with the new job and look forward to seeing her again before too long.) The rest of us continued on through Horton cum Studley and whooshed down Pan’s Hill for a much needed cup of coffee at The Nut Tree at Murcott. Two more riders appeared as we sat outside enjoying the warmth, making a grand total of twenty eight all together. We returned through Islip and Woodeaton. The rides leader was Karen Wolff and sweeping duties were shared between Lucy Wright, Lucy Tennyson & Ellen Lee.

Fri 14 August 2009: the Isis Cyclists’ garden party (see photographs)
Over thirty Isis Cyclists and their friends and other halves brought real feast of delicious savoury and sweet dishes to make a sumptious garden party on this Friday evening in August. The food and the atmosphere was truly wonderful and it seems that a really good time was had by all. Those who stayed late closed the occasion with the lighting of a Chinese lantern (and we must make apologies to whoever’s garden it seemed to come down in about a mile away!)

Sat 1 August 2009: 10 miles towards Yarnton
Today the unthinkable happened: it rained on an Isis Cyclists ride! Despite a dire weather forecast, six brave Isis riders gathered in Sumertown for our first-Saturday-of-the-month ride. We set off northwards on cycle tracks to Cutteslowe before crossing over the ring road on the cycle bridge and heading towards Kidlington. After a brief flirtation with suburbia, we emerged in the country at last. Before long we found the welcome shelter of the cafe at the Yarnton Garden Centre. After tea and cakes, some retail therapy and an interesting discussion about how to scare cats, we braved the elements again, returning to Oxford along the A44 cycle track and Oxford Canal. The rides leader was Ellen Lee and the sweeper was Lucy Wright.

Sat 18 July 2009: a 20 mile ride to Long Hanborough
We meet in Summertown in lovely sunshine to ride up through Wolvercote, joining the canal towpath and ending up at the Hanboroughs where we found (to our delight) a village hall serving tea and homemade cake at a very genteel price. After eating them out of all their cake, having some lovely chats and laughs, and buying a few CDs etc from the sale, we made our merry way back to Oxford via Cassington and the A40 cycle path. The ride leader was Sarah Spackman and the sweeping was shared by Karen Wolff and Amanda Wrigley.

Wed 8 July 2009: a 5 mile ride to the Victoria Arms in Old Marston
This evening ride started from the Sheldonian Theatre on Broad Street and headed out towards the Victoria Arms in Old Marston via Port Meadow and Wolvercote. After a convivial hour or two with pints and supper people wended their own way homes. The ride leader was Amanda Wrigley and the sweeper Sarah Spackman.

Sat 4 July 2009: a gentle 8 miles around Bagley Wood
We met at Carfax for this short and steady ride which took us in the direction of Kennington and Bagley Wood via the Thames Path. We stopped for coffee and cake at the Isis Tavern at Iffley. The ride leader was Amanda Wrigley and the sweepers were Lucy Tennyson and Lucy Wright.

Sat 20 June 2009: twenty miles
The ride leader was Sarah Spackman.

Sat 13 June 2009: the Isis Cyclists’ charity ride for the Jane Ashley Unit (see photographs)
Around 35 women gathered in a dazzling array of pink outfits at the Radcliffe Camera for this charity ride. Bikes were decked out with ribbons, signs and balloons, collection buckets were issued, and we set off in two groups for a figure-of-eight ride first north to Wolvercote and then south to Iffley. The glorious weather had worked its charm on all we came across, and rarely did a pedestrian refuse an invitation to contribute to the collection pot. Donations were met with cheers and a chorus of bicycle bells (and only occasionally kisses!) We are particularly thankful to the managers of the Trout and the Perch for letting us approach their customers and for making donations themselves.  On the morning of the ride, our hoped-for target of £3000 had been reached on the justgiving.com site, and a further £550 was collected on the ride. At the time of writing the total stands at nearly £4000! Donations can be made at www.justgiving.com/isiscyclists up until Friday 10 July. An enormous thank you to all those Isis Cyclists who generously donated, persuaded friends and family to contribute, and came out in such splendid force on the day! A longer write-up of the day will be circulated before too long and in due course we hope to have information from the Jane Ashley Unit on how they might use the money raised.

Sat 6 June 2009: ‘Five Miles to Fabulous’ (plus another five!) along waterways and cycle paths (see photographs)
The CTC’s annual ‘Five Miles to Fabulous!’ campaign to encourage women onto their bikes is the event which got the Isis Cyclists off the ground in June 2008. This year’s ‘Five Miles to Fabulous’ neatly coincided with the Isis Cyclists’ regular first-Saturday-of-the-month short ride, so there were two five mile rides back to back and a 1st birthday celebration! Twelve riders met in the steady rain at Oxford railway station for a gentle meander north along some of the city’s waterway cycle paths and by-ways, returning via Binsey Lane and North Hinksey. The second ride went south by the Thames Path and number 5 cycle route, by which point tea and cake at Amanda’s house was well-deserved! It’s extremely unusual for it to rain on an Isis Cycle, so big thanks to all for turning out, and special thanks to Stephen Lee for baking us such a delicious 1st birthday cake!

Sat 23 May 2009: two rides converging on the University Parks for a riverside picnic (see photographs)
Today was a bit special: we had two rides of different lengths to enable all Isis Cyclists to join together for a riverside picnic in celebration of Isis leader Ellen Lee. At 10am on Saturday 23 May, a 15 mile ride will set off from the Sheldonian Theatre in Broad Street, and at 11am an 8-10 mile ride will set off from the same starting point. The 15 mile ride, which headed out in the direction of Woodeaton, was led by Amanda Wrigley. The 8-10 mile ride was led by Ellen Lee, taking ‘The Devil’s Backbone’ to South Hinksey, and returning via North Hinksey and Jericho. Both rides were ‘mixed socials’, and approximately thirty-five people met up at the University Parks for a picnic in glorious weather! Thanks to all for making this such a lovely occasion!

Sat 2 May 2009: eight miles in a north-easterly direction
After meeting at Café Noir in Headington the ride went beyond the ring road for a slow and steady eight-miles, mostly along quiet country roads, heading back towards the centre of town via a refreshment stop the Victoria Arms in Old Marston. The ride leader was Ellen Lee and Sarah Spackman was sweeper.

Sat 25 April 2009: a ‘mixed social’ ride to Wytham Woods in search of bluebells (see photographs)
Male friends and partners of Isis Cyclists joined us today for our third mixed social ride. Around thirty (!) riders gathered at the Sheldonian for the ride out to Wytham Woods via Folly Bridge, Osney Lock, Oatlands Road, Binsey Lane and Wolvercote. Timing was perfect: bluebells as far as the eye could see! After a short walk around the Woods we stopped for refreshments at the pub in Wytham, and then wended our very happy way in unseasonal but gorgeous summery weather back to town via Wolvercote and the north Oxford cycle path. The ride was approximately 10 miles in length. The ride leaders of the two groups were Amanda Wrigley and Ellen Lee, and the sweepers Karen Wolff and Stephen Lee.

Sat 18 April 2009: 20 lovely miles to Bletchingdon (see photographs)
We met at the Sheldonian Theatre and set off in the direction of the University Parks, heading out towards Islip and Bletchingdon where we stopped for refreshments. The weather continued to get brighter and sunnier as we returned to Oxford through Hampton Poyle and Kidlington. The ride was 20 miles in length. The ride leader was Sarah Spackman and the sweeping was shared between Sarah’s friend Marion and Amanda Wrigley.

Sat 4 April 2009: 8 miles to Kennington by quiet roads and waterways
We met in front of Christ Church for a slow and easy ride through south Oxford towards Kennington. From there we headed down towards the river, where we followed the Thames Path in the direction of Oxford, stopping at the Isis Tavern in Iffley tea and cakes. The ride was 8 miles in length; the ride leader was Lucy Tennyson and the sweeper was Amanda Wrigley.

Sat 21 March 2009: a gorgeous 19 miles to Common Leys Farm (see photographs)
Meeting at the Sheldonian Theatre enabled us to leave town via the cycle path alongside the University Parks and Marston. After cycling through Elsfield we headed towards Stanton St John and Common Leys Farm, where we met emus (we think!), llamas, donkeys, and very happily and lazily sat in the sun drinking tea and coffee and eating cakes and scones. We looped back to Oxford via Worminghall, Waterperry and Wheatley and Horspath. The ride leader was Helen Beane and the sweeper was Eileen Johnson.

Sat 14 March 2009: 2nd ‘mixed social’ ride to Long Hanborough
This was our 2nd ‘mixed social’, occasional rides which are open to male friends and partners of Isis Cyclists. We started in Summertown, and rode out to Yarnton along the A44 cycle path from where we took B roads to Long Hanborough. The weather was gloriously blue-skied and sunny as we sat outside the Bell having a cup of tea, before taking the road through Church Hanborough and Cassington back to Yarnton. At Yarnton we followed a bridlepath for a mile which brought us out on the cyclepath by the A40. At Wolvercote we joined the canal towpath which brought us out at the Anchor pub, where most of us stopped for a lovely lunch. The ride was 18.5 miles in total. The ride leader was Amanda Wrigley and the sweeper was Karen Wollf.

Sat 7 March 2009: a slow-and-steady 10 mile wander to Kidlington
We met at the entrance to the University Parks and rode out through the back streets of North Oxford, skirting Cutteslowe Park and then following a lovely cross-country route which ended up north of Kidlington. We then followed the cycle path across Richard Branson’s land, calling in at a coffee shop in Kidlington before wiggling back to town following Sustrans route number 51, and finishing up on the canal tow path and more refreshments, for some of us, at the Anchor in Jericho! The ride leader was Karen Wolff and the sweeper was Amanda Wrigley.

Sun 22 February 2009: a 35-mile joint ride with Oxford City CTC group
Isis Cyclist Helen Beane led an Isis-friendly Oxford City CTC mixed group ride. This is the second of these joint rides which are arranged for those intrepid Isis Cyclists who have asked for the opportunity to sample a longer ride at a faster pace. The ride head out towards Milletts Farm (for coffee and cake) and Steventon (for lunch).

Sat 21 February 2009: 18 miles to Cuddesdon
Headington was our starting point for a leisurely, countryside route to Cuddesdon via Stanton St John and Wheatley, with a lovely stop in the Bat and Ball pub for tea and biscuits. The weather was really kind to us today, with clear blue skies and mild temperature – in fact it felt like decidedly springlike! The ride leader was Amanda Wrigley (with thanks to Ellen Lee for excellent route planning!) and the sweeper was Helen Beane.

Sat 7 February 2009: 8 miles
This ride did not go ahead because of the unusually persistent snowy conditions.

Sat 24 January 2009: our first ‘mixed social’ ride to Abingdon and back (see photographs)
Some regular riders requested the occasional ‘mixed social’ to feature in our programme, so male friends and family joined us on this 18 mile ride when we made out way down to Abingdon via the Thames Path, Radley, and Thrupp Lane. We stopped for refreshments in Abingdon, before setting off along countryside roads back to Oxford via Shippon, Dry Sandford, Wootton and Boars Hill. The ride was 19 miles in total, and the ride leader was Amanda Wrigley and the sweeper was Sarah Spackman.

Sat 17 January 2009: an 18-mile wander to Woodstock
The first longer ride of 2009 began in Summertown. The ride leader was Amanda Wrigley and the sweeper was Sarah Spackman.

Sat 3 January 2009: 9 miles to Wytham
The first slow and steady 5-10 mile ride of 2009 started at Broad Street at the unusual time of 1.30pm, following a special feature on the Isis Cyclists on Phil Kennedy’s BBC Radio Oxford show that morning. The ride took a leisurely route up to Wytham by way of Willow Walk and North Hinksey. After a courageous cup of tea or two on frosty benches in the Tea Shop Garden at Wytham we cycled to Godstow where half the group ventured back to the centre of town via the Thames Path and Port Meadow (which were absolutely stunning in the afternoon light), while the others headed home in northerly directions.

Sat 20 December 2008: 17 miles around North Hinksey, Cumnor and Boars Hill
Today’s ride started from Broad Street, heading out in the direction of North Hinksey via cycle tracks to North Hinksey, where we crossed the ringroad and cycled through Raleigh Park to emerge near the top of Cumnor Hill, from where we made our way to the Bystander in Wooton for refreshments (much needed after two punctures by this stage!) From Wooton we cycled up Old Boars Hill, returning to Oxford via Bayworth, the Sustrans track from Kennington and Iffley. The ride leader was Ellen Lee.

Wed 17 December 2008: Christmas lights night ride (see photographs)
We met at 6pm in the centre of town for a gently-paced tour of official and unofficial Christmas or Winter Lights within Oxford, Jericho, north Oxford, and Marston. We cycled for about an hour and a half, before coming to a wonderful rest at a Christmas street party on North Parade where we enjoyed quite a bit of mulled wine, gorgeous food, a brass band playing carols, and a local morris side doing a street performance. The ride leader was Ann Furtado.

Sun 7 December 2008: 16 miles … or more?! Joint ride with Oxford City CTC group
For the first time, Isis Cyclists joined the Oxford City CTC group ride for those Isis Cyclists who asked for the opportunity to sample a longer ride at a faster pace. We met outside Campus Stores on Broad Street at 9.30am, and headed out towards Waterperry Gardens for a coffee and cake stop. Some Isis Cyclists continued on the full 40 miles (bravely, as it was extremely cold!); and Amanda Wrigley and Ann Furtado led others back to Oxford via a shorter route following coffee. The ride leader was Isis Cyclist Helen Beane.

Sat 6 December 2008: A very gentle 8 mile ride, followed by mulled wine and mince pies!
We met at 2pm at Carfax for this short and steady ride, heading out in the direction of Sandford-on-Thames via the Thames Path and circling Bagley Wood. The ride was approx. 8 miles in total, but three miles from the end we broke for mulled wine, mince pies and parkin at the ride leader Amanda Wrigley’s house in the old part of Littlemore. The party was held to thank everyone for their support of the rides over the last six months. It was a really lovely end to the ride!

Sat 15 November 2008: 20 miles in the direction of Charlton on Otmoor
We met at 10am in Headington in gorgeous weather (especially for November!) and headed out of town via Marston to Woodeaton, Islip, Oddington, Charlton on Otmoor, Fencott, and stopping for a well-earned break at The Nut Tree pub at Murcott (which opened early just to serve us coffee and bread and butter – we loved them!) After a good old natter we were glad to get back on the bikes to warm up, and we headed back to Headington via Horton cum Studley and Stanton St John. Thanks to the ride leader Helen Beane for a well-paced ride through some really gorgeous countryside, and to Ellen Lee for brilliant sweeping. The ride was taken at such a lovely pace that the 20 miles seemed to fly by!

Sat 1 November 2008: 6 miles despite the threatening rain!
Today’s ride was meant to be a little longer than 6 miles, but the rain was so heavy that we all agreed to seek refuge in a café in Headington! We had meant to get as far as Cutteslowe Park and Wolvercote Green, but we look forward to reviving this plan on another day. Ann Furtado led; Ellen Lee supported; and Amanda Wrigley was sweeper.

Sat 18 October 2008: 20 miles via the Ice Cream Farm at Weston-on-the-Green!
Meeting at Summertown enabled thirteen riders to head out towards Kidlington, Hampton Poyle and Bletchingdon, returning via Islip with a very popular refreshment stop at the lovely Ice Cream Farm at Weston-on-the-Green! Ellen Lee led this ride; Amanda Wrigley did chatting; and  Helen Beane swept. One positive bit of feedback afterwards reads: “Just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed the ride on Sat, on a route that in spite of living in the area for 17 years I’d never done before. What you have going there is fantastic for new cyclists to encourage them out and for people like me who just fancy a social cycle ride from time to time – what a variety of people came out from Bulgaria to Israel to a woman who lives round the corner from me. Keep up the good work”.

Sat 4 October 2008: eight miles along Oxford’s waterway cycle paths
Lots of riders turned out for this popular ride (reprised from Amanda’s Five Miles to Fabulous ride in June) which began at the railway station and headed north via the canal towpath to Port Meadow, and then heading up the Thames Path as far as Binsey Lane, where we went south to Botley Road. A short stretch along the cycle path by the road took us to North Hinksey, where we picked up Willow Walk all the way to the Thames Path at Grandpont, where we paused for a short break. From there we headed south, wending our way along quite roads to Donnington Bridge where we joined the Thames Path and cycled north back to the city centre. Amanda Wrigley led the ride and Helen Beane did excellent sweeping.

Sat 20 September 2008: waterfalls, nature reserves and more!
Sixteen riders set out on a glorious ride to Forest Hill by way of the A40 cycle track, swooping down through Stanton St John and pausing to take in the local waterfalls, then along pretty lanes to the nature reserve by Oakley Wood where we stopped for a short break. We returned home via Horton-cum-Studley, Beckley and Elsfield. Ann Furtado led this ride; Amanda Wrigley did chatting; and Ellen Lee swept.

Sat 6 September 2008: 6 miles around Marston
Nine riders enjoyed a 6-mile route around old and new Marston while the rain – thankfully – held off. We began and ended the ride at Summertown. The ride leader was Ellen Lee and Amanda Wrigley was sweeper.

Sat 16 August 2008: 16 miles to Waterperry Gardens and back
In good weather nine riders set out from Cowley Road for a gentle cycle to Waterperry and back. Riders were rewarded for the couple of big hills by a relaxing coffee and cake stop at Waterperry Gardens! The ride leader was Amanda Wrigley and Ann Furtado was sweeper.

Sat 2 August 2008: 10 miles to Islip
We met in Marston, cycling out to Woodeaton, Islip, Water Eaton and returning for coffee in Sommertown. Thirteen of us enjoyed this route along countryside roads, with a particular highlight being the gorgeous bridalway route from Kidlington to Cutteslowe. The ride leader was Ann Furtado and Amanda Wrigley was sweeper.

Sat 19 July 2008: a 19-mile route to Abingdon and back
Despite the morning rain, eight riders turned up for the first ‘impromptu’ longer ride by the group. After a bit of emergency tyre-pumping up on three bikes, we set off at 10.15am and made our way to Abindgon via the Thames Path, Radley, and Thrupp Lane. We had a lovely half hour in the sun outside a café in Abindgon, and then set off via Caldecott, Shippon, Cothill and the mighty Boars Hill back to Oxford. The ride was 19 miles in total, but we went nice and slowly and had plenty of pauses. We were back in Oxford for lunchtime – or ice-cream-time at G&Ds!  A couple of riders wrote with such encouraging feedback afterwards that longer rides will certainly feature again in the programme: “I just want to thank you again for a fantastic ride on Saturday.  The elements were in our favour and it was fun, informative, invigorating and relaxing.  Look forward to the next one!” and  “Just to thank you for organising the bike ride on Saturday, I really enjoyed seeing a bit more of the Oxfordshire countryside”. The ride leader was Amanda Wrigley.

Sat 5 July 2008: the first short ride of the new Isis Cyclists group!
Meeting at 10am in Summertown, sixteen riders (including one apologetic man, but not counting one rider’s very well-behaved poodle called Louis!) rode by the canal towpath as far as Wolvercote. After half an hour’s relaxing chat in the picnic area next to the old bathing place, the ride took the Thames Path in the direction of Oxford, cycling across Port Meadow, and returning to Summertown via Aristotle Lane. The ride leader was Ellen Lee; the sweeper was Helen Beane.
