January 2016

Ellen writes… A very happy New Year to everyone. I hope you’ve been able to get out and about a bit, despite the wind and rain. Let’s hope that the elements are kind to us and that all our January rides will have great weather. However, if winter does decide to visit us and we need to cancel a ride, an email will be sent to the Google Group. We will also try to put a notification on Facebook and the website, but this isn’t always possible.

Unfortunately, we haven’t yet sorted out the weekend away. But fear not, it will happen and you’ll be able to book in February. The dates remain the same, 17th-19th June, so mark the weekend in your diary.

SATURDAY 9th JANUARY: SHORT AND STEADY RIDE: HEADING NORTH TO EAST OXFORD

Meet from 9.45am in Radcliffe Square (at the back of the University Church) for a 10am departure for a ridiculously circuitous route to coffee at the East Oxford Farmers and Community Market. We will head out through leafy North Oxford before turning south through Jericho back to the city centre where we will pick up the river towpath to Iffley. We will wend our way up through the village emerging on Rose Hill before finally heading towards our destination between Union St and East Street. The route is 9 miles long, so cakes are fully justified! Why not bring an empty pannier to take some shopping home? The route is mostly flat, but there is one climb from the river at Iffley up to Rose Hill. This can be taken at any pace, or walked. The ride leader is Ellen Lee (ellen@133.me.uk).

SATURDAY 16th JANUARY: MEDIUM RIDE –  A WINTER LEG-STRETCHER OUT TO HORTON CUM STUDLEY AND STANTON ST JOHN

We’ll meet at the corner of Osler Road and London Road, Headington at 10.00 am for a 10.15 am departure. We will set off for Stanton St.John, then towards Boarstall, crossing the M40 a couple of times on our way to Horton-cum-Studley. We will then return to Stanton St. John for refreshments at the Talkhouse Pub. After that, we will return to Headington a more direct way, via Forest Hill and the A40 bike path. This ride is 17 miles long (most of it before refreshments!) and there’s a bit of a hill after Horton, but there are also some lovely downhills, too! The ride leader will be Liz Weekes. Check out the route.

SATURDAY 23rd JANUARY: LONG RIDE

Meet outside Marks & Spencer in Summertown at 11.45am for a noon departure. We will pick up the cycle track to Cutteslowe Park and then the bridlepath to Water Eaton and cycle through Islip and up to Weston on the Green, where we will stop at The Milk Shed for refreshments. It will be a leisurely stop so those who want to order lunch can. We will then head back towards Islip and Woodeaton and back into Oxford via Marston. The ride is approximately 22 miles long. We will aim for a pacey 12mph so we don’t get cold and so we get back before it gets dark. However, the service can be slow at the Milk Shed, so please bring lights just in case we get caught short. we hope to get back into Oxford around 3.30 – 4pm. Leader: Natasha Williams.

SUNDAY 31ST JANUARY: JOINT ISIS/OXFORD CITY CTC RIDE TO MILLETS FARM

Meet in Broad St near Oxford Campus Stores for a prompt 9:30am departure for Millets Farm near Frilford. The route will leave Oxford via the Botley Rd and Cumnor Hill before continuing through Cumnor village and Besselsleigh where we will cross the A420 to Dry Sandford, Cothill and Marcham. There, weather permitting, we will push our bikes through the church yard and take the track which meets the A3238 near Frilford cross rds. We will then proceed, via the Abingdon Rd, to Millets Farm for coffee. The return route will take us through Fyfield, Appleton and Cumnor before cutting down from Cumnor Hill to North Hinksey and back to the centre of Oxford using Willow Walk and the river towpath. The ride to coffee and back is 24 miles and includes one climb, that of Cumnor Hill. The ride leader is Ellen Lee (ellen@133.me.uk).
